Impact is aiming for a 7th LCS title and could be crowned as the best toplaner in the West if not defeated this weekend
The LCS Summer Split is coming to an end this weekend and will crown one of the three remaining contenders as the best North American team: Team Liquid, FlyQuest, or 100 Thieves. These three teams are already guaranteed a spot at Worlds 2024, but they will also compete to determine who will be sent to the Play-Ins of the tournament.
A weekend to crown the toplane King
The teaser released yesterday by Riot Games puts an interesting storyline in the light: this is also a weekend to crown who is the LCS' best toplaner in 2024.
"The greats are made great because... this is what they live for" said Gabriël "Bwipo" Rau in the video's introduction. After his arrival in the league in 2022, looking for a rebirth after his different struggles with Fnatic in LEC, he is still fighting his way out to earn his very first LCS title. Since his last title in 2018, he played five finals and always ended up in second place. He is looking for a way to break the curse and has been a part of a very interesting year for FlyQuest so far as they have been the only real contender to Team Liquid's domination.
"I've wondered why others give up and retire so quickly. Why would you want to quit something this fun? Is there anything better than this?" questioned Jeong "Impact" Eon-young. The current toplane king and probably one of the best toplaner in the West explains that his longevity and current shape are also due to him still having a lot of fun playing at the highest professional level. He recently earned the Summer Split MVP title making him the oldest MVP in the league's history and is now aiming for a 7th LCS title as Team Liquid is already qualified to the Grand Final. Impact simply is the man to take down if you want to prove yourself in North America.
"These guys are like freaking boomers [...] I can't wait to take away that trophy from Impact". Rayan "Sniper" Shoura, is only 17 years old and is already qualified to Worlds for his first ever year in the LCS. This is the Canadian's first final in an arena full of roughly 5000 people, but it seems like the player knows how to manage his emotions during high-pressure series. Indeed, 100 Thieves pulled out an impressive run so far in the Summer Championship, defeating Dignitas twice and Cloud9 in an impressive manner, and he took a decisive part in these wins. Eager to go even further in the competition, he has already done better than their previous split where they ended 4th.
Matches stakes & forces & affiches
Only two matches remain, as FlyQuest faces 100 Thieves today at 22:00 CET to determine who will compete against Team Liquid tomorrow for the crown. The losing team will finish 3rd in the split and will have to go through the Play-In stage, starting on September 25, against Movistar R7 (LLA).
