Bigodes completes heroic upset over R8 Esports to reach the RLCS 2026 World Championship Group Stage

Bigodes have surprised the field by reaching the RLCS 2026 World Championship Main Event through the lower bracket of the Play-In. Virtus.pro, Team Falcons and FUT Esports join the South American third seed in the Group Stage, which will begin tomorrow. Bigodes, who were knocked down to the lower bracket after losing 0-3 to Virtus.pro, defeated Five Fears 3-1 and narrowly subdued MENA’s third seed R8 Esports, 3-2, winning a highly anticipated inter-regional contest. Coming in as free agents, Bigodes qualified for the World Championship with a win in the South American LCQ, defeating favourites BS+COMPETITION 4-3 in the grand finals.

Virtus.pro, Team Falcons, FUT Esports all comfortably achieved qualification to the Group Stage. After beating Bigodes 3-0, Virtus.pro took down European sixth seed Mate y Tapa 3-1. Team Falcons showed their guile by beating a volatile FUT Esports 3-1 before defeating regional rivals R8 Esport 3-1 to qualify. FUT Esports were given the tougher task of making it through the lower bracket after their loss to Team Falcons, but did so with relative ease. They beat TSM 3-1, after the APAC team were knocked down by R8 Esports in a five-game series, before defeating Mate y Tapa 3-0, despite the first two games going to overtime. As a result, Mate y Tapa, R8 Esports, TSM and Five Fears (who won their first RLCS LAN game this season) have all exited the tournament after the first day of results.

The Bigodes roster, featuring Arthur "DRUFINHO" Langsch Miguel, Bernardo "Bemmz" Siqueira Marta, and Olímpio "nxghtt" Torres contains considerable experience. All three players have competed at an RLCS World Championship before and were part of South America’s peak as a region in the RLCS. Their qualification to the Main Event, means that it is the first tournament since the RLCS 2022-23 World Championship where South America has been represented by three domestic rosters.

After reaching the Paris Major and showing signs of promise at the EWC, R8 Esports exit at the hands of Bigodes comes as a big surprise. The young squad was on track to make the case for MENA’s third seed and depth as a region. However, their early exit comes as a big blow, putting an asterisk on an impressive Split, where R8 Esports surpassed Team Falcons domestically in the MENA pecking order. On LAN, the MENA upstarts still have a long way to go, but contain some of the region’s most promising talents outside of the two top organizations. in the form of World Championship debutant Mohammad "M7md" Almutairi, as well as Ghazi "Ghaazi" Al-Otaibi and Abdullah "Abdullah" Alsanie.

The groups were announced following the broadcast and will take place over two days. Twelve teams will then advance to a three-day Playoff Stage which will determine the winner.
