Sources: Head Coach bonkar reaches verbal agreement with NRG on three-year contract extension

NRG has arguably been one of the most successful and consistent VCT teams of 2026. The organization finished in the top three at every regional tournament and Masters Santiago, while also qualifying for VALORANT Champions Shanghai as the title defender.

Hoping to carry its current form into the 2027 VCT season, the American club has already started putting the pieces of its puzzle together. As a result, Malkolm "bonkar" Rench has already reached a verbal agreement to extend his contract with NRG for three more years, according to Sheep Esports’ sources.

The extension comes as NRG prepares for the conclusion of the 2026 season and the transition to Riot Games’ new VCT format in 2027. bonkar, who has been instrumental in the team’s rise globally, first joined the organization as head coach ahead of the 2025 VCT season after making a name for himself in the North American Challengers scene with Oxygen Esports.

As part of a major roster rebuild following a disappointing 2024 campaign, he brought in the team’s current duelist, Adam "mada" Pampuch, alongside Andrew "Verno" Maust, who later joined MIBR. While bonkar was moved to the inactive roster for a short period in 2025 following Kickoff, he returned later in the season, which was a turning point for NRG. The team went on to finish as runners-up in VCT Americas Stage 2 before lifting its first-ever Champions trophy in Paris.

Despite losing one of the squad’s most experienced players, s0m, who retired from competitive VALORANT ahead of the 2026 season, bonkar strengthened the roster by bringing in Georgio "keiko" Sanassy from EMEA.

NRG currently has three players under contract through 2027. Ethan “Ethan” Arnold, mada and keiko are all tied to the organization until the end of the 2027 season, according to Riot's Global Contract Database.

Meanwhile, Logan “skuba” Jenkins and Brock “brawk” Somerhalder have contracts that expire in 2026. With their deals set to expire sooner than those of their teammates, the situations of these players could become a point of attention during the upcoming offseason.

bonkar’s contract extension could prove crucial for NRG, especially with Riot Games introducing open qualifiers to the VCT circuit starting in 2027. Unlike the current partnership system, partner teams will receive direct invitations only to Kickoff, while qualification for both Cups, as well as Masters and Champions, will depend entirely on their performance.

As a result, maintaining consistent results will become even more important, as a poor run could prevent a team from qualifying for the regional and international events that follow. Retaining bonkar could provide NRG with the stability that teams across the VCT ecosystem will be aiming to achieve under the new circuit and format.
