The Society had a perfect weekend by quickly dispatching both teams with convincing 2-0 victories. Following his successful Week 5 performance, Sheep Esports chatted with Ham “” Yoo-jin. The MVP of Week 5 spoke about his growing confidence, the work Head Coach "Greyson “Goldenglue" Gilmer is doing to increase the chances of a deep playoff run, and how Choi “” Jae-hyun helped the jungler develop his synergy with his mid laner.
We’ve heard that the Sentinels have had some issues and miscommunication on how to start fights. But compared to the last two weeks, these last two series have looked incredible. What’s changed this week?
Ham “HamBak” Yoo-jin: “I don’t know why we’re playing better this week, but we’ve just focused not on winning or losing, but just improving in scrims. That was a point in this series.
Could you pinpoint a specific change, or did Sentinels just play better?
HamBak: Maybe we just played better, yeah.
Coach Goldenglue has a history of taking underdog teams to Worlds. Do you think Sentinels have a shot at fitting this description?
HamBak: Yeah, I think so. We’re a similar team, kinda, so we can do that too.
What’s your opinion on Goldenglue’s coaching? What does he bring to the table, and is he a big factor in Sentinels’ recent improvement?
HamBak: Goldenglue is good at the friendship outside of the game, too. He can make one team, and then he likes putting us together and doing things together. We can create good teamwork on this team. That’s Goldenglue’s advantage.
Tell me about the importance of this advantage.
HamBak: I don’t know why it’s so important, but things out-of-game are so important too. When we review our scrims, we can start fighting. We can be talking, but it’s similar to talking and fighting in review. We also think together out of the game. We’re allowed to focus. I think it’s just simple: if out-of-game is good, then in-game is good.
Sentinels have now qualified for the playoffs. Why should teams be on the lookout for Sentinels?
HamBak: We have good confidence now, because of our two wins in this clean game and in the last two series. We can be in the top three in the LCS, but C9 is similar to us. I think is the best, then second, then , then us, and finally FlyQuest maybe in the middle. We have to beat C9 and the middle teams.
Is there anyone on the team that helped you get more confident?
HamBak: Maybe Huhi (Choi Jae-Hyun)?
What did Huhi do to get you more confident?
HamBak: We talked about how I can get jungle advantage with (Isaac Chou). So we focused on that in-game. He explained how to play the game’s mid-to-late game phase better. I learned it, and it’s a good synergy with him.
You seem to play better when you are feeling confident and fearless. How can Sentinels make you always confident?
HamBak: My teammates give me a lot, but I have confidence in myself, too. So I have confidence in myself.
Do you always feel super confident, or has it been a recent feeling?
HamBak: Not always, but if I have an advantage in the early game, then I can beat everyone.
Do you sometimes find yourself struggling with confidence outside of the game?
HamBak: Out of the game, I'm just thinking about... what’s not an advantage. About the opposite of an advantage? I’m thinking about any disadvantage.
You do not play next week, and you’re facing C9 in the last week. In which place is Sentinels finishing the regular season?
HamBak: Third? Third! Or second? Maybe third. I hope second, but it's hard.”
