With the return of
League of Legends Classic, one of the most
iconic champions from that era is back as well:
Sion AP. Here's the best
build,
runes, and
masteries to get the most out of the champion.
Best build on Sion AP on LoL Classic
Now one of the most popular tanks in the game, Sion was originally played as an AP burst champion. Once he picked up a few items, he could deal massive damage, as his playstyle heavily relied on farming to reach his power spikes. His ability kit was also drastically different from the version players know today.
- Starter Items: Doran’s Ring and Health Potion
- Boots: Boots of Mobility
- Build: Rabadon’s Deathcap —> Liche Bane —> Deathfire Grasp —> Phantom Dancer —> Abyssal Scepter
Ability Order and Summoner Spells
When playing Sion AP, prioritize W, followed by Q, and finally E.
Sion's Summoner Spells are fairly standard, with Flash for mobility and Ignite to add some damage and anti-heal.
Best Runes & Masteries on Sion AP on LoL Classic
Players will unlock Runes, Masteries, and additional Rune Pages through Classic Levels, with default pages available from the beginning to ensure everyone can immediately play.
Runes
To unlock Runes, you had to earn Influence Points (IP) by playing games. Those IPs were then used to purchase runes individually, which meant it took quite a few matches to complete a full rune page.
Sion naturally gains a significant amount of health through his kit, allowing his runes to focus on increasing his damage output instead of survivability. Ability Power Seals and Ability Power Quintessences boost the damage of his abilities, making his burst much more threatening once he has a few items.
Since Sion's damage comes from both his abilities and basic attacks, Hybrid Penetration Marks (or Penetration Marks, depending on the rune set you're referring to) are an excellent choice to maximize his damage in close-range fights. To round out the page, Armor Seals provide valuable durability in lane, helping him withstand trades and remain effective in extended skirmishes.
- x9 Greater Mark of Magic Penetration
- x9 Greater Seal of Armor
- x9 Greater Glyph of Ability Power
- x3 Greater Quintessence of Ability Power
Masteries
To unlock
Masteries in
League of Legends Classic, all you had to do was play games. They were unlocked fairly quickly after just a handful of matches. These are the best masteries for Sion AP Jungle:

What's different from the current version of Sion
- Sion's current Passive is one of the most iconic abilities in LoL. When he dies, he temporarily reanimates with rapidly decaying Health, allowing him to continue attacking nearby enemies before finally collapsing. In League Classic, however, his passive was much simpler, giving him a 40% chance to ignore the damage from an incoming attack.
- His Q has also changed completely. Today, Sion charges up a massive swing that damages enemies in front of him and knocks them up if fully charged. In the original version, Cryptic Gaze was a point-and-click stun that dealt magic damage to a single target.
- The W has remained the most similar ability across both versions. The modern Soul Furnace grants Sion a shield that can be reactivated to explode and deal magic damage. In Classic, it worked in a similar way, creating a shield that lasted up to 10 seconds before automatically exploding if it hadn't already been shredded. Players could also manually reactivate it after 4 seconds.
- His E is another ability that was completely redesigned. Today, it fires a short-range shockwave that damages, slows, and reduces the Armor of the first enemy hit. If it strikes a minion, the minion is knocked back, damaging anything in its path. In League Classic, the ability instead granted bonus AD at the cost of Health on each basic attack, while also permanently increasing his maximum Health whenever he killed a unit.
- Finally, Sion's Ultimate bears almost no resemblance to its modern counterpart. Today, Unstoppable Onslaught sends Sion charging across the map, damaging and knocking up enemies on impact. In Classic, Cannibalism instead granted him bonus Attack Speed and Lifesteal for 20 seconds, while causing his basic attacks to heal nearby allied champions for a percentage of the damage dealt.
