The
Esports World Cup quarterfinals delivered yet another day of surprises on Friday. The final series ended with
eliminating
, the MSI runners-up and the
LPL's last remaining representative. Now through to the tournament's top four, DK will face
, the only team still undefeated at the event, for a place in the Grand Final.
Following an outstanding team performance and a remarkable comeback in Game 3, the Korean side can be more than satisfied with the progress they have made throughout the tournament. After the victory, support player
joined
Sheep Esports to reflect on the team's run and discuss the competition so far.
You made a great performance today. What was the key to your victory and the comeback in Game 3?
Oh "Career" Hyung-suk: "Our teammates are all in really good form and playing really well, so there's a lot of trust built up between us. We believed that if the game went late, we could beat any team, and since our champions had better late game value, we played with the mindset that if we just got to the late game, we would win.
You took down BLG, one of the favorites of the competition and also the last team representing China. How does that feel for you?
Career: I saw BLG as a real title contender and an extremely good team, so beating them on the international stage means a lot. Our belief in ourselves and in what we should do going forward has risen a lot too, so it felt great.
Do you feel like Dplus might have been underrated by observers and fans analyzing the competition, mainly compared to LPL teams or G2, for example?
Career: Honestly, I'm not interested in how we're rated. We believe we're the best, so no matter who's evaluating us, we always think we're the best team.
You're in the semifinals of the first international competition of your career. How does it feel? Is it something special?
Career: It's my first international event, so making it to the semifinals feels great. There are two matches left now, and I want to win both of them and go all the way to the title.
What do you think about playing against supports from other regions? You played against Labros “Labrov” Papoutsakis, and Luo “ON” Wen-jun today for example. What does it feel like to face different supports?
Career: I think Labrov is a really good support, but to me, he felt fairly standard. ON, though, I think he's really good on fast-paced, mobile supports, and his champion pool is very wide. Our playstyles overlap a bit too, so I went into the game keeping that in mind and thinking about what I needed to do.
It's your first international competition, but three players on the team are also playing their first international event. How does Heo “ShowMaker” Su help lead this team when you guys are not as experienced as him?
Career: ShowMaker is the player with the most international experience on our team, and with that much experience, just his presence is reassuring. He also makes things really comfortable for us in actual in-game play, so it's great. Thanks to ShowMaker, it always feels like a good experience.
Tomorrow, you’ll be playing against Joo “Duro” Min-kyu, can you give one aspect in which you think you're better than Duro, and one aspect where you think Duro is better than you?
Career: I think Duro is a really good player. His vision control is excellent, and I think he's one of the sturdiest supports out there. And for the rest, I think I'm better.
Which team would you like to face in the final if you manage to beat Gen.G tomorrow?
Career: I want to face T1 and would really like to play a series against them.
In the first game of the competition, you played Trundle support. In which situations do you think Trundle support is a fitting pick?
Career: It was really just about the draft. I looked at the composition and thought Trundle wasn't a bad fit, so I gave it a try, partly to build up some experience.
Last question: in France, we have a kind of joke that goes, "What do you think of your career?" As your name is Career and we’re in France, I've to ask you: what do you think of your career so far?
Career: I won at the academy level on my way up, and I won in the second team as well. Now I want to win everything with the first team, internationals and all, and I think I'll keep building a good career going forward."
