In 2014,
Samsung White won the
League of Legends World Championship against the Chinese side
Star Horn Royal Club while wearing white jerseys. The following year,
SK Telecom T1 claimed the title in black. Since then, the pattern among World Champions has changed every year, alternating between black and white. The only exception, although not quite an exception, came in 2018, when
Invictus Gaming lifted the trophy in grey jerseys that nonetheless featured touches of white.
A three-time consecutive World Champion over the past three years,
, one of the most historic organizations in the game, has also seemingly embraced the superstition. In their defeat to
DRX in the 2022 final, the team wore a black jersey and jacket — just like 2021 champions EDward Gaming —, and the omens were consequently not on their side. A year later, the team apparently took note of the lesson and once again kept their black jersey… only to eventually claim the title. Over the following two years, the team alternated between white and black to complete their three-peat, and, true to form, the Korean organization recently unveiled the white jersey they will wear at this year's competition.
T1 is far from the only team following the pattern, as organizations around the world appear keen to put the odds in their favor. Not every jersey has been unveiled yet, but recent
LCK champions
have also opted for white, as have all of the qualified
LPL teams, as well as
in Europe.
