On Friday, FURIA achieved their first victory at the League of Legends World Championship 2026 Play-In by defeating Cloud9 in the lower bracket. With this result, C9 became the first team to be eliminated from the tournament, while FURIA have set up a rematch against MVK Esports in the next series.
The Brazilian organization started with a loss in Game 1 but quickly recovered to close out the series 3-1. Moreover, the victory extended FURIA’s winning streak against C9, after the 3-0 win in the Americas Cup last March.
“GG 3x1 x Cloud9 and we finally opened the gate to 14 consecutive wins in internationals. Now let's go for more wins. TOMORROW X MVK,” said the team’s jungler, Pedro "Tatu" Seixas Brito.
“Our floor is too low as a team…”
FURIA entered the elimination match following a 0-3 loss to MVK in its opening series and got off to a slow start against C9 as well. It initially seemed as though the North American organization might finally register a win against the Brazilian side. “First C9 Kia game win vs FURIA in LoL Esports history. We take those,” Cloud9 tweeted.
However, FURIA managed to pull off an impressive comeback to keep its tournament hopes alive. Botlaner Andrey "Ayu" Saraiva was named the match MVP after finishing the series with an 18/6/19 KDA. “BOOM Furia knocks C9 out of the WORLDS 2026 play-ins!!! 3-1 Historic day for Brazil! These Worlds were shaping up to be wild, and from the play-ins, they already are!!!” TLN Pirates assistant coach and One Trick Production caster, Frédéric "Glopo" Sialelli, stated.
That said, FURIA still needs to win two more series before it can join LØS in the Swiss Stage and represent the region. For Cloud9, the past few years have been difficult on the international stage. Despite making several new additions to its roster, the team was unable to turn things around and extend its Worlds run.
“At the end of the day our fragility as a squad falls on me as the head coach. I was unable to create a circumstance where we could bounce back from yesterday’s and came into today with the same level. Our floor is too low as a team and in the end that is what separates us from the teams better than us. Nothing more to say,” said the team’s head coach, Christian "IWillDominate" Rivera.
The team’s support, Philippe "Vulcan" Laflamme, called the squad “pathetic,” while botlaner, Edward "Tactical" Ra, also expressed his disappointment regarding the elimination: “disappointing series by me to end our worlds run and year GGs”
MVK and FURIA’s Second Encounter
MVK Esports and FURIA will face each other for the second time, with the Brazilian side hoping to carry its momentum into the next series and get revenge against the LCP representative.
Ahead of the rematch, Tatu said during the live broadcast, “I don’t think we even looked like a team yesterday. It was like one of the worst days of my life. Being honest, MVK got us in the first half, not gonna lie. But tomorrow we’re gonna get them.”
The winner of the best-of-five series will face Karmine Corp in the next round, with a spot in the Swiss Stage on the line. The loser, meanwhile, will be eliminated from the tournament and head home.
