are one of the first two teams to qualify for the Worlds playoffs, alongside Gen.G. The only team yet to drop a map at the tournament, DK are returning to the knockout stage for the first time since 2022 after defeating G2 Esports, T1 and Movistar KOI.
A symbol of the dominance of a young team with little experience but no fear, support has delivered outstanding performances so far. Following his team’s qualification, he spoke to Sheep Esports about DK’s flawless run through the tournament.
The draft in game 2 looked really spicy. What did you think about drafting strategies in this series?
Oh “Career” Hyung-suk: “I had in mind the Caitlyn–Bard combination from the beginning because I wanted to gain an advantage in the botlane during the laning phase through the draft. We had a general idea of what picks the opponents might bring out, and we proceeded with the fourth and fifth stages of the draft based on those predictions. When I saw that the opponents had picked Gnar first, we thought that Irelia would be a good choice. Since (Jeon Si-woo) handles Irelia extremely well, I put more emphasis on that aspect.
During game 2, DK had drafted three winning lanes, and it speaks to the confidence that you just mentioned. Did you feel that this confidence helped you going into a game with such wacky picks like Diana mid and stuff like that?
Career: Whether the opponents picked Diana or chose any other champion, we had conviction and confidence in our own picks. And even if things weren't going particularly well in the top and mid lane matchups, we were feeling very confident about the botlane. So, I continuously communicated calls saying, “The botlane is going well,” in an effort to instill a sense of stability in the team.
Your celebration with Kim "cvMax" Dae-ho after the win yesterday was grandiose. Can you tell us how important he was to you as a coach during your development?
Career: I am certain that I wouldn't have grown this much without cvMax. We have great synergy, and since he is such a great coach, I was able to learn a lot from him. Now, our bond goes beyond a simple coach-player relationship. It feels like family, which has had a very positive impact. He makes me feel comfortable, and I try to do the same for him. Beyond just giving great feedback, he also helps me immensely outside the game, including what kind of mindset to have as a person.
Something that catches my eye a lot about you is your eyes. You have such childlike wonder in everything that you do. How important are these qualities, like feeling that everything is new, feeling that you want to experience everything, for a competitor?
Career: To be honest, there were times during my professional career when I doubted or felt disappointed with my job. However, after joining this team and making many good memories with a great coaching staff, and outstanding players, I realized how happy one can be in this profession, and I felt that becoming a professional gamer was truly the right choice. Being able to experience firsthand all the support from the local fans here in Texas and the fans in Korea at such a big event feels really great. I'm grateful to be able to compete on such a big stage, and I always feel excited about it. It makes me want to keep playing in matches going forward.”
