Riot Games is financing a documentary dedicated to Technoblade, one of the most popular Minecraft creators of his generation, who died in 2022 at the age of 23 from cancer, according to an article from Variety. The project is also being financed by Hypixel Studios. His crowned pig avatar was notably honored in A Minecraft Movie, which was released in theaters in 2025.
Titled Technoblade Never Dies, in reference to the creatorās famous catchphrase, the feature-length documentary will be produced by Candle True Stories and directed by documentary filmmaker Steven Lake. Technobladeās family is also involved in the project. Riot Games and Hypixel Studios will also donate their profits from the film to charity.
The documentary is now entering production and does not yet have a release date but is expected to receive a theatrical release followed by wider distribution. The project is āan independent feature documentary to bring Technobladeās story and community to audiences around the world,ā the US outlet reports, citing Candle True Stories.
āThrough intimate access to his family and friends, hundreds of hours of Technobladeās own content, and stories from the massive global community he inspired, the film will explore how a shy and anonymous California teenager transformed himself into a Minecraft warrior whose humor, skill, and singular personality captured the hearts of millions,ā the production company said in its description of the documentary.
Riot Games and Hypixel Studios reunite around Minecraft
Riot Gamesā involvement is particularly notable given its history with Hypixel Studios. Riot first invested in the studio in 2018 before fully acquiring it in April 2020. Founded by the team behind the Hypixel server, Hypixel Studios was developing Hytale at the time, a sandbox game inspired by the Minecraft experience and combining building, exploration, and RPG elements.
Announced in December 2018, Hytale quickly attracted significant interest from the community, notably due to its proximity to the Minecraft ecosystem. The project nevertheless spent several years in development and underwent several changes in direction under Riotās ownership. After years of work, Riot announced the cancellation of the project and the beginning of Hypixel Studiosā wind-down in June 2025. The studioās original founders eventually bought back the studio and Hytale from Riot a few months later. Hypixel Studios thus regained its independence, and Hytale entered Early Access in January 2026.
