After months of uncertainty, extensions, and careful wording,
Riot Games has officially confirmed that
ARAM: Mayhem is now set to stay as a permanent game mode in
League of Legends. Earlier this year, the mode
had already been extended indefinitely due to its overwhelming popularity. At the time, Riot stopped short of labeling it
“permanent,” instead opting to monitor player engagement while continuing to support it with updates. That decision alone was a strong indicator of the mode’s success. Now, the distinction is gone. ARAM: Mayhem has been formally embedded into the game’s long-term lineup.
What’s Next for ARAM: Mayhem?
Back in January, Riot acknowledged the mode’s popularity and confirmed it would remain available beyond its original window. However, no formal statement about permanence had been made. The wording left room for future adjustments depending on player engagement and internal priorities.
Since then, ARAM: Mayhem has continued to receive active support. Most notably,
Patch 26.03 delivered a substantial update to the mode. The patch introduced augment sets, grouping synergistic augments together to create more structured build paths, while also increasing the overall power level of the available options.
Rather than scaling the mode back, Riot chose to push further into its defining identity:
high-impact augments and exaggerated teamfights. The addition of sets not only added clarity to augment combinations but also created room for future expansion. New themed sets, additional rotations, or further adjustments to power scaling now seem more plausible within this framework.
Importantly, ARAM: Mayhem does not replace standard ARAM. The classic Howling Abyss experience remains unchanged, while Mayhem exists as an alternative built around augment-driven variability. The permanence of the mode suggests Riot sees value in maintaining both experiences side by side. It also raises interesting possibilities for the future — particularly now that augment sets have been established as a core system. Further expansions or refinements seem likely, especially if player engagement remains consistent.
What began as a
seasonal experiment has gradually evolved into a stable part of the game’s lineup. And this time, the “indefinite extension” label has been replaced with something more definitive.
But what even is this mode?
I’m glad you asked! ARAM: Mayhem is a special League of Legends game mode that takes the classic ARAM experience and turns it up to eleven. It keeps the core of ARAM intact—five-on-five battles with random champions clashing down the single-lane Howling Abyss map—but adds a twist: each match, players gain four to five powerful augments that drastically change how their champions behave. These augments aren’t just small bonuses; they can completely redefine a champion’s role in the fight, letting you experiment with creative and sometimes chaotic strategies you wouldn’t see in traditional ARAM.
Whether it’s turning Sona into an unkillable frontline tank or sending Mordekaiser zipping across the bridge at lightning speed, ARAM: Mayhem is designed to make each game feel fresh and unpredictable. The augments are introduced gradually throughout the match, giving players the opportunity to build unique combinations and respond to how the fight unfolds, which adds a new layer of strategy and replayability to the familiar ARAM setup.
The mode draws inspiration from Arena and Wild Rift’s AAA ARAM, blending fast-paced teamfights with strategic augment selection. The result is over-the-top skirmishes that still feel unmistakably ARAM—chaotic, exciting, and endlessly replayable. ARAM: Mayhem takes the classic ARAM formula and twists it in surprising ways. Champions can gain game-changing powers, encouraging players to experiment, find creative combos, and approach teamfights in entirely new ways.
