FUT Esports missed their first opportunity to secure a place in the
Masters London playoffs. After a strong opening performance against
FULL SENSE, the Turkish side fell 2-1 to
Team Vitality, despite two highly competitive maps in which the balance ultimately tipped in favor of the
VCT EMEA Stage 1 finalists.
Nevertheless, FUT still have another chance to qualify, with an elimination match scheduled for Wednesday. Following the team's first defeat of the tournament, Eray “yetujey” Budak, the longest-serving member of the roster, spoke with Sheep Esports about the team's current form and their prospects moving forward.
What is your first feeling after the game?
Eray "yetujey" Budak: “I feel so bad because in the upper final of VCT EMEA, we also lost against them. It was a close match like today, so I just don't want to lose against Vitality anymore. I hope we can make the playoffs and face them again to win this time because I really want to beat them.
What do you think was missing in this game to beat them?
yetujey: I think in a high-pressure situation, we can have good communication, which is needed, and we were so close to winning all the maps. But I don't know, maybe we don't have enough strategy in the rounds, for the ultimate rounds in particular. We just need some to work rounds that we can 100% win. For pistols, today was really good for us, but at the end of the day, we lost. We just need to understand that everyone is a human in this team and keep our mental level high. We shouldn't be sad or angry at anyone after the rounds. We just need to have better communication and a better mentality.
Yesterday you made a great entry in the competition against FULL SENSE. What would you was the key to victory?
yetujey: It was an international match. We really needed to see our team in an international match for everyone on the team. It was their first international match, so they were so hyped and so happy about that. I think that really gave us some confidence and a good place.
This roster is still pretty young and doesn’t have a lot of experience on the international stage. How would you say you are dealing with the pressure?
yetujey: I always like pressure in both ways. People can always cheer for me and go crazy for me. Of course, that makes you feel better. And people can always hate us or just support the other team. I always take it as a good sign in the match. If I see someone yelling for them or someone is yelling for us, I always try to play with the fans because I like the passion that they have, and I am always just trying to make it a show. So I don't care that much about the pressure.
Among your teammates, Efe "s0pp" Tur 's debuts were really awaited on the international stage and he showed two great performances today and yesterday. How did you find him personally?
yetujey: Actually, when Vlad (Berke Kantürk) came to the team as a head coach, he said that he wanted s0pp, and after two or three hours in practice, we understood why he wanted him. I had already played against him; he was really good against me and won the Red Bull Home Ground against us in Turkey. I know he was a good player, and today and yesterday, he did show a good performance. He's just a crazy guy. We don't tell him that much what he has to do. He always does what he wants to do. So we just let him play and do our tactics in a good way. We just let him and xeus (Doğan Gözgen) do all of the entries and play freely.
A lot of VCT fans knew him with his Neon because he mainly played this agent during Stage 1. We saw him on Jett and Chamber today. Would you say that he and your team will be better now that the meta has shifted?
yetujey: Yes. At the beginning of the year we talked about that. We have two really good duelist players, and we were thinking about possible meta changes during the year, and wondered what we were going to do. We said that we would just adapt to it. Right now, we're showing really good performance without Neon, and s0pp says that he can play every agent, whatever we want from him. He's showing it in a good way; he did really well on Chamber and other Duelist agents. So we don't care that much about it, we just focus on our game and that's fine for us.
On a personal side, it's the second time you're playing a Masters tournament with FUT Esports. How would you say this roster is the most particular?
yetujey: I think this roster is looking hungrier to win. Of course, I love all of the people that I played and worked with, but there wasn't that sparkle about winning, and I can't see the same passion in my last teams. But right now we are really hungry for the games and that always makes us feel more emotional. Sometimes we are getting hungrier, and we are getting happier because of the results. I think the biggest particularity of this roster is the hunger to be successful.
To talk about the tournament again, which teams right now are you considering as good contenders or favorites in the competition?
yetujey: Right now, I would say Leviatán. I really want to play against them. I hope they can win today. If they lose, I really want to play against them, but if they win, I hope we can see each other in the playoffs as well. They have a really nice roster, and they're nice people. For the other teams, I don't know that much. I always want to play against Americas’ teams like G2 Esports or NRG. I hope I can face them. I also want to beat Team Heretics. This time I hope we can win because we lost several times.
Right now, would you consider these Masters as a success for your team if you make it to the playoffs?
yetujey: Yes, of course. Making it to the Masters is already a big success for every team in the world. And also making the playoffs in the Masters or Champions would also be a really good success for us. We can say that if we make the playoffs, we can say to ourselves that we did well and we are successful because it's the biggest tournament that you can play in right now.
If we look at the bigger picture, would you say it's realistic to see your team aiming for the title?
yetujey: Yes, of course. If we play our game, we can beat anyone. We don't care about what people think or what the enemies are thinking. We just play our own game. If we lose, we probably lose to ourselves and if we win, that means we are good.”
