The
LCK season will return next week with the now traditional
LCK Cup. All ten teams from the region will compete following an offseason during which many organizations, including the title contenders, were particularly active. In total,
twenty-one roster changes were recorded, reflecting a turbulent period in which numerous teams sought to strengthen their lineups.
Only the reigning LCK champions, Gen.G Esports, have retained the same roster as last season. Last year, Hanwha Life Esports claimed victory in the inaugural edition of this competition before going on to win First Stand shortly thereafter.
An offseason bomb amid widespread changes
It is impossible to discuss roster changes in the LCK without mentioning the move that generated the most attention. After more than five years with
T1, three consecutive World Championship titles, and a Finals MVP award at the most recent of those victories, Lee "
Gumayusi" Min-hyung has left the team to join Hanwha Life Esports for the upcoming season. This transfer came as a shock to
League of Legends fans, as did the arrival of his replacement at T1: Kim "
Peyz" Su-hwan, who returns to Korea after spending a year with
JD Gaming.
The recent World's finalists,
KT Rolster have also undergone changes, with their entire botlane departing to join
DN SOOPers. Two former world champions are making their return to Korea as well, with Jang "
Ghost" Yong-jun role-swapping to support and joining KT Rolster, and Lee "
Scout" Ye-chan set to compete with
Nongshim RedForce.
Other teams will attempt to put last year’s disappointments behind them by fielding revamped rosters, most notably
Dplus KIA, who have restructured their bot lane with the arrivals of Sin "
Smash" Guem-jae and Oh "
Career" Hyung-suk. The same applies to renamed team
HANJIN BRION, who have opted for a complete overhaul by changing all five players on their roster.
