Since its release on April 18, the game “Rolol Gamos” has quickly become a hit among fans of League of Legends. The game has even attracted professional players and fans from around the world.
The game mode originates from the community website
lolix.gg, created by the team of French streamer Jean “
TraYtoN” Medzadourian. The platform has existed since the beginning of the year and already includes several game modes as well as tools for following competitions such as the LEC and the LCK. A few days ago, one of the site’s developers, Noé “
Gulli” Morvillers, launched a new mini-game on the platform.
The concept, however, wasn’t entirely new. “The basic idea comes from Roland Gamos, from the rap show Rap Jeu hosted by Mehdi Maïzi, it’s the same game, but with collaborations between rappers,” Gulli explains. “We’d played it with LoL teammates during TraYtoN’s streams and it went really well, so I’d wanted to launch it on Lolix for a while. I just had to take the time to figure out how to pull all the data from Leaguepedia, without which none of this would be possible.”
The rules
Matches usually last only a few minutes and begin when the website generates the name of a professional League of Legends player. From there, one of the two players must name another pro who has previously played on the same team as that player. If they succeed, their opponent must then name a player who has played with the newly mentioned player. The process continues back and forth until one of the players becomes stuck and can no longer name a valid teammate connection.
The winner earns points to climb the game’s ladder ranking, while the loser loses points. Like in a competitive ladder system, players can continue playing in order to climb as high as possible on the leaderboard. Matches can lead players across all major leagues, tier-2 competitions, and even second divisions of ERLs across different eras. For example, it’s possible to go from Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok to Marc “Caedrel” Lamont within the same streak.

A huge success in just a few days
The new mode has achieved remarkable popularity in only a short time, attracting more than 4,500 players within a few days, a reach that even its creator didn’t anticipate. “I figured the game would appeal to some people, but I thought it would stay very, very niche,” Gulli admits. “What really surprised me is that it caught on internationally. We’d already had a mini-game, lolxiflair, that did pretty well in the French community back in February, but this is the first time we’ve really reached the international scene.”
Even professional players have tried it, enjoying the novelty of being able to use themselves and former teammates as valid answers, sometimes uncovering surprising connections. For instance, Alex “Myrwn” Villarejo, toplaner for Movistar KOI, shared a screenshot of one of his matches on X. The mode has sparked lively discussions among users on the platform, with some claiming to have played more than 1,000 games in just a few days.
For Gulli, that side of things has been one of the most rewarding. “I think it’s cool that it pushes people to dig and rediscover, or discover, names of lesser-known players,” he says. “And I get the impression it makes former pros and semi-pros happy to see their name pop up in a game like this. That’s really cool to see.”
Watching the data roll in has produced its own surprises. “What struck me the most is how fast the ‘meta’ shifts,” he notes. “All it takes is one player finding a slightly unusual connection on a well-known name, DoinB to V, for example, and in less than 24 hours that player goes from 10 uses to more than 500, because everyone starts using it after getting stuck on it the game before.”
What’s next
The early traction has the team moving quickly. A more advanced ranked mode is launching imminently, and other mini-games, both multiplayer and solo, are already live on the site. “I’m going to keep working and trying to find new ideas,” Gulli says. “This really shows how receptive the community can be, and how fast word of mouth can travel when the work is there.”
