Following their 2-1 defeat to XLG in the Upper Bracket quarter-finals of the
VALORANT Champions Tour
Masters London, G2 Esports were sent to the Lower Bracket in a do-or-die match against FUT Esports. After the match, 2023 World Champion Alexander
"jawgemo" Mor spoke to
Sheep Esports about the challenges he and his team faced during the game, his thoughts on the tournament, and more topics.
First of all, how are you feeling after this quarterfinal match against XLG?
Alexander "jawgemo" Mor: “It was a bit rough. We had a lot of stuff fleshed out, and some of the stuff wasn’t fleshed out. We kind of missed some of our micro situations, and I think that just ended up leading to a few rounds lost. Maybe we wanted the pistol because of it, couldn’t convert some of the other rounds. It’s just rough, you know. You need those rounds to win the game. That’s just how it is, and we failed at that.
You dominated early in the match, but XLG fought back as the map progressed. What made this match so tough for you?
jawgemo: I think we had a good read on what they did the majority of the time. I think some stuff was just out of order in the moment. Obviously, they have a little bit more of a chaotic micro, especially on the last map. The way they play, you have three guys flying in, like the triple dive, I would say. That can catch a lot of people off guard, and I think that’s kind of what happened. I feel like our retakes were pretty good on that last map. It kind of just came down to some of the clutches, or, like I said, the micro plays that made us a man down. Then we just had to retake or save.
Did you expect that kind of gameplay from them? In your opinion, which aspect of their game was really dangerous tonight?
jawgemo: I think we expected them to do what we normally know. I just think that we didn’t actually get that much space on that attack side on Split. For Ascent, they just had a little bit more info. They had a Cypher, they had a Sova, so they had more traps. They were more aggressive. This is the first time I’ve seen XLG be really aggressive. NoMan (James Man) stepped into the play today, happywei (Teng Min-wei) is always doing his thing, and Rarga (Arthur Churyumov) was good on Ascent too. I’m kind of glad to see these guys actually improving in their roster.
I imagine that when you come into this Masters, the goal is to win the title. In your opinion, what is G2 missing to take home the trophy?
jawgemo: I would say maybe, for us, it’s just a little more poise. I think we know that we can be the best. It’s just that when it gets chaotic, we need to get some order in and make sure that we’re all on the same page, doing things together. Today, it felt like we were doing stuff half and half. Sometimes you would see us do stuff together, and then sometimes we would kind of fall off and do our own thing, which is still fine. That’s where the individual shines. But when it doesn’t shine, that’s when we have to be a team and know that we’re a team. We all make mistakes. We just have to figure it out together.
You also talked about the aggressiveness of the XLG roster. You will face FUT Esports, and we also know that Turkish players can be very aggressive. What will be your main focus before this match?
jawgemo: Yeah, Turkish players. I mean, I’ve played against the majority of that FUT roster, with different variations, since like 2023. There was always a new aimer in their team. Now they have two, I think. xeus (Doğan Gözgen) and s0pp (Efe Tur) looked very good. We played with them in ranked in EMEA, on some Paris servers, and we were just shooting the shit, having fun. We were like, That guy is insane. s0pp is insane. I think he knows he can be a very aggressive duelist. If you don’t give him the kills, maybe he won’t be that oppressive. EDG kind of had the showing today and stopped them, so maybe that’s what we could do.

Let’s talk a bit about the level of the tournament. Do you think this tournament is more stacked than the previous one?
jawgemo: I would say yeah, it’s more stacked. There is just one more dark horse that came into play, and that is FUT. They were one of the teams that I was kind of excited to play coming into the tournament. But I definitely think it’s more stacked, yeah.
You’ve been here for a long time, competing against the best every year. What gives you the strength to keep going, and what do you think is essential to keep that competitive fire burning?
jawgemo: For me, it’s just seeing the new faces. Seeing people that you don’t think can do what you do at home, or in scrim days, whatever the case is. That’s the enjoyment I get. I like to see that other people grind, and I think I just like to beat people that grind harder or grind less, whatever the case is, and just knock them out. That’s basically it.
Speaking of the lower bracket, do you think teams coming up from the lower bracket have an advantage in the Grand Final compared to those who just wait in the upper bracket?
jawgemo: I’d say it’s a little bit of an advantage. I think towards Champions, there is no waiting around, waiting for playoffs and stuff like that. Those are more fun events, where you kind of learn what your flaws are. But obviously, if you come in knowing your things and knowing your stuff, I think that’s also good. It’s just team-dependent. I think we failed at that today, but we had some good showings. We have a lot of fixes to recover from, and then I think we’ll do the lower bracket run again. That’s just how it is. The G2 way.
After a few days, you’ve been able to get back into ranked. How is it going for you, and how do you find EU ranked?
jawgemo: It’s pretty funny. I like to troll some of the Paris people. I don’t know why. I like their accent, you know. They have a very fun accent to mess around with. I know you (Mehdi “Ztitsh” Boukneter) and Lou (Lou “loupiote” Henguelle). I always make fun of Lou, I always troll her. But yeah, Paris is probably the best, then London. We have five ping, so why not just aim at duel people? But Frankfurt, woow. Frankfurt might be the worst, I can’t lie. I will not queue Frankfurt, sorry. But if you do see me there, I will be trolling you. That’s just how it is.
To finish, do you have any words for the G2 fans who support you in this tournament and throughout the whole season?
jawgemo: I appreciate you guys sticking by. We definitely have a new team. This is our second showing. All we need is some time, but we can’t wait that long, and we can’t fail again. There’s so much theory around what our team does and where we fail. But we stopped believing in that. Today, we definitely stopped believing in that, and we kind of lost. But we’re here, we’re going to keep trying, we’re going to keep fighting, and G2 are here.”
