The Roadtrip in Madrid did not begin in the best possible fashion for
, who fell 0–2 to G2 Esports on Friday. The Blue Wall therefore suffered its first defeat of the
LEC Spring Split regular season, with two matchdays remaining on Spanish soil before the standings are finalized ahead of playoffs.
In an exclusive interview with
Sheep Esports, Head Coach Bok “
Reapered” Han-gyu reflected on what his players lacked to come out on top in this clash between the two leading teams in the
League of Legends EMEA scene. The KC coach reflected on the Game 2 draft, particularly
’s Olaf pick, which caused significant problems for his players throughout the game.
First of all, what went wrong in today’s series? From the outside, it felt like you fought well, but it wasn’t enough.
Bok "Reapered" Han-gyu: “The first game’s early game didn’t go well, and then they had a nice draft against our team comps. So basically, if we fall behind, it’s hard to come back because we don’t really have enough damage against the enemy team. And in Game 2, it looked good for us for a bit, and then… probably I’d say we weren’t really reading how they wanted to play the game or how they could attack us. We did a good job attacking them, but not defending against the enemy’s plays. So that’s probably the most important thing I’m thinking about, and then yeah, that went wrong.
Olaf in the second game looked so strong and was the biggest threat. Did you expect the pick?
Reapered: Yeah, I mean, if Olaf gets fed, obviously, he’s going to be strong against us. But at the same time, he is also kinda alone with their composition and against ours. It should be hard to reach Xin’Zhao, Ashe, and Seraphine. So it depends on how much he can get ahead, or how much we open opportunities for 3v3s on botside with Ashe-Seraphine and Xin Zhao. So, pretty much there are pros and cons, but in the end, he did carry the game.
This split has been a bit unusual. You’ve almost played as many stage games outside Berlin as in the LEC studio itself. How do you feel about this format?
Reapered: It’s fine, I guess. Overall, it’s been a good experience to have roadtrips, and I’m kind of happy we get a lot of these opportunities. For sure, it affects the number of scrim games because of all the traveling and being outside Berlin. Basically, we can’t control a lot of things, but at the same time it’s also an experience you’ll have to deal with in the future anyway. So I don’t really mind. Honestly, it’s been fun having roadtrips, and we’ve also been successful in past roadtrips. So yeah, nothing special.
You already secured playoffs. How are you approaching this roadtrip? Are you more focused on results right now, or also treating it as an experience playing on stage?
Reapered: This is the last week of the regular season for us, and we already have one loss against G2 right now. So at this point, I’m thinking this is the right moment to take these experiences for the future — not only just for winning, but also for showing our weaknesses and strengths as well. So we’re working on the weaknesses, and playing on stage, this is also good practice time for us.
You face tomorrow. What do you need to fix for tomorrow? Or was today just a bad day?
Reapered: I’d say every individual, including coaches and players, has to focus more and step up. Because there were a lot of mistakes from before the game even started until the end of the game. So I’d say as long as we focus on ourselves and step up, then it’ll be fine.
And last question — will we see revenge over G2 in Playoffs?
Reapered: Yeah, obviously. I mean, that’s why we’re here, right? [Laughs]”
