Gameplay in
League of Legends is taking a more measured turn in Season 2 of 2026, with Riot Games focusing
on refining existing systems rather than introducing major changes. And while this might seem the case because of the shorter duration of the season, it actually points to where Riot landed after players’ feedback on past seasons.
Expected to launch with Patch 26.09 on April 29th, Pandemonium, the new season of League, continues Riot’s effort to respond to player feedback after the “more experimental” updates of previous seasons — like Atakhan from 2025.
Instead of new mechanics, Season 2 of 2026 centers on quality-of-life improvements, role clarity, and expanding player choice through items and runes to better support different playstyles in League.
Role Quests Reward Changes, New Runes, New Items
Riot is making role quests easier to conquer while still keeping each role clear and distinct. Progress in top and midlanes has been adjusted to be more forgiving, meaning players who roam or play outside standard patterns will not fall behind as easily, even though they still need to return to the lane to progress.
Lead Gameplay Designer, Matthew Leung-Harrison, explained that role quests are designed to reinforce each champion’s identity by guiding them toward clear strengths and playstyles, much like items that feel essential to how a champion is meant to be played.
And so in the same way, Riot is also working on making builds more interesting and more tied to each champion. And instead of treating items only as tools for specific situations, the team wants some items to feel like a core part of how a champion plays.
“
We’ve kind of moved more towards having items fulfill certain specific fantasies on players,” Leung-Harrison said, explaining that some items are now designed to feel essential for certain champions — for example,
Sheen-based items on Corki.
Similarly, the idea worked through the runes systems, with Deathfire Touch and Stormraider’s Surge runes returning, with the latter replacing Phase Rush as a movement option. And even with this shift on core builds for champions, Riot still wants players to experiment with things like AP Ezreal or Attack Speed Xin Zhao as alternative builds that should feel more viable starting with Pandemonium.
