The announcement of the roster that will represent South Korea in
League of Legends at the
2026 Asian Games did not come without a few surprises.
Korean e-Sports Association (KeSPA) officially revealed yesterday the list of players selected to participate in the competition, which is expected to begin on September 9.
Among the decisions made by KeSPA, several attracted significant attention and even surprised parts of the community. In the toplane, the organization opted to select
player
, a choice that can hardly be considered undeserved, although it also meant leaving another highly regarded toplaner aside in the form of

.
Incorrect criteria
Many fans viewed the omission of the Gen.G player as unfair, a sentiment that appears to be shared by the organization’s CEO. In a post published on his X account, Arnold Hur publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, specifically criticizing the criteria used during the selection process.
According to KeSPA, the selection process relied heavily on what it described as “detailed individual metrics.” These measurements included various individual statistics such as solo kills, damage per minute (DPM), KDA, gold difference per minute, and similar performance indicators. A framework that the Gen.G CEO appears to consider either misguided or, at the very least, lacking sufficient contextual nuance.
“If your criteria are built mostly from individual mechanical stats without proper statistical context, you haven't found the best players, you've found the players whose teams were built to make them look best,” he explained in his statement, adding that Kiin frequently embraces a weakside role and is willing to play under difficult conditions in order to enable his teammates to shine. “Every one of those choices is a teammate's DPM going up instead of his. He trades his stat line for his team's win condition, every single game.”
Indeed, throughout this season, Kiin has often been placed on champions that require relatively limited resources and attention. His most-played champions this year have notably included Sion and Renekton. As Arnold Hur also pointed out, another element that he believes was insufficiently considered is champion pool diversity, which highlights the player’s flexibility, having already played 19 different champions this season.
The Gen.G CEO, nevertheless, clarified that he does not dispute Zeus’ talent or legitimacy as the selected player. He even described him as “world-class and earned his spot. The players aren't the problem. The measuring stick is.” In a follow-up post, he further stated that he did not understand the logic behind excluding performances achieved at MSI from the evaluation process, referring to the fact that KeSPA based its assessments primarily on performances in the LCK, the Worlds, and the KeSPA Cup.
