On Tuesday, March 31st, Riot Games revealed an upcoming
VALORANT patch introducing a series of
targeted adjustments to improve gameplay clarity, consistency, and the overall player experience. While the update does not radically alter the current meta, it addresses several mechanics that have caused frustration, particularly in coordinated environments, and implements broader quality-of-life improvements across the game.
The most significant gameplay change concerns Waylay, whose ability to create low-risk engagements has drawn increasing scrutiny. Her Saturate ability has been reworked from an instant cast into an equip-based ability, preventing players from applying Hinder immediately while airborne or in reactionary situations without exposing themselves.
Riot Games stated that Waylay’s previous design allowed her to chain abilities and set up teammates with minimal personal risk, which conflicted with the intended high-risk, high-reward identity of Duelists. This adjustment is expected to encourage more deliberate usage and stronger team coordination.
Viper consistency improvements
Alongside these balance changes, Riot has implemented backend improvements to Viper’s Pit in order to ensure more consistent behavior when interacting with map geometry. Although these changes may not be immediately noticeable for most players, they aim to eliminate edge cases where the ability could fail or behave unpredictably in specific locations, such as Haven’s A Tower or Icebox’s A Pipes, thereby reinforcing reliability in high-stakes situations.
The patch also introduces broader systemic and quality-of-life updates, including enhancements to end-of-game visuals and interface readability, as well as a long-requested adjustment to Flex items, which now match melee movement speed. Additionally, Riot is enabling Push-model Replication as a server-side optimization designed to support future performance improvements. While no direct impact on the client experience is expected, the change reflects an ongoing effort to strengthen the game’s technical infrastructure. You can fin the full patch below.

GENERAL UPDATES
- We’ve updated Victory, Defeat, and Draw end-of-game visuals and sound effects.
AGENT UPDATES
While we’re happy that Waylay’s found her role in team compositions, we’ve noticed that Saturate creates situations with little to no counterplay when used with the rest of her kit.In particular, we’re seeing Waylay combo her abilities to safely target players with Saturate for her teammates with almost no risk. We think Duelists play best when they are using their kit with some risk, and when that risk falls primarily on the Duelist themselves.By changing Waylay’s Saturate from an INSTANT cast ability to an EQUIP, she can no longer Hinder enemies instantly while airborne or reactively on contact without greater risk to herself. This incentivizes Waylay to coordinate with her team to mitigate risk for herself, rather than using it as a setup piece for a teammate to capitalize on.

Waylay

- Saturate changed from INSTANT to EQUIP.
We're making some changes to the backend tech for Viper's Pit. While most players likely won't notice a big change, we're hoping it gives Viper's Pit more consistent behavior and removes any possibility for failure to cast, especially on certain sections of some maps. You’ll see some examples of that improvement in places like Haven A Tower or Icebox A Pipes

Viper

- Viper’s Pit chemical cloud has been updated to be more consistent in the way it spreads around map geometry.

COSMETICS UPDATES
Since the launch of Flex over a year ago, we’ve gotten a lot of player feedback that while Flex are cool, it doesn’t feel optimal to use them because they use Ability movespeed rather than Melee movespeed (Ability Movespeed is 90% of Melee movespeed). Specifically, we've gotten feedback that players are less likely to equip Flex because they're afraid of accidentally equipping them mid-round due to a misclick, thus nerfing their movespeed during a critical moment. After lots of testing, we’re ready to roll out this change with some guardrails (namely, make sure that all Flex follow all competitive integrity guidelines in 3rd person).
- Flex movespeed is being increased to match Melee movespeed. This will apply to all past and future Flex.
PERFORMANCE UPDATES
- We’re enabling Push-model Replication as an optimization for our game servers and to unlock future performance gains. We don’t expect anything to change with your game client, so let us know if you see anything weird!
