Facing
in their Esports World Cup opening match,
did not hesitate and secured the victory in less than 25 minutes, giving them a confidence boost to start their tournament. After being heavily defeated by Lyon in the Mid-Season Invitational lower bracket semifinal and with Luka "Perkz" Perković taking over as head coach, the German organization will have to build new momentum.
It was in this context, following this victory, that
G2 midlaner Rasmus "
" Winther sat down with
Sheep Esports. In this interview, the Danish player discussed the coaching change, the limited amount of time they have had since MSI, and what the roster will need to do to build a new dynamic.
How important was it for you to bounce back after the MSI elimination?
Rasmus "Caps" Winther: “I mean, it's definitely very important. We didn't get a big break, so I think we just need to use our time well, need to stay sharp, and need to be fast at adapting, and I think we were still missing quite a lot of things that we want to improve on. But we did make some progress, and we became aware of it quickly. So I'm just excited for our next match, obviously.
Have you been involved in the decision-making regarding the coaching staff changes and the new role of Perkz?
Caps: In terms of decision-making, it's always on
G2. The club makes the calls on the roster, but of course they will always listen to us. They will make the decision based on how the feeling is on the team and how the players are feeling.
Perkz has a very good way of speaking with players and he also thinks like a former player; he definitely has some shared experiences, and he has been a good source of confidence. He's good at giving confidence. I think a lot of our players seem more confident over the last month.
It's been an interesting change; of course, it's very new as well. We only had one day of scrims so far with Perkz, and it's very big shoes to step into as well. Of course Dylan (Dylan Falco) is the guy I have worked with the most out of anyone in my career, and he's always done a very good job. Perkz definitely has big shoes to fill, but I'm excited to see what his approach will be like.
How is it to have your former teammate as a boss now?
Caps: It's definitely fun. He does try to lead us. Even though he wasn't head coach before, he was also coaching us last split and helping us with various things. So it's been good, and I'm sure it's going to be great as well for the upcoming tournaments.
To explain that there was a different vision between Dylan Falco and him, how would you describe the difference in their visions?
Caps: I think the biggest difference is definitely just the way they see... I mean, one way they see the draft, the way they see gameplay, and the way he thinks or works as a player is one where he wants us to really be adaptable and flexible. Dylan is very good at drafting around our strengths and making sure that we have something that we are comfortable with. Perkz's thing has always been to discover the uncomfortable things. He had a thing that he used to say, that he's only comfortable when he's uncomfortable. And he's trying to bring that to our team as well. I mean, I saw Hans (Hans Sama, Steven Liv) playing Syndra today as well. He played it maybe five or six years ago, but it's been a long time. And I'm sure that he's going to test us in many, many ways.
Talking about MSI once again, days have passed since the elimination. Have you had enough time to reflect and take some lessons from the loss you suffered?
Caps: Definitely, we have many takeaways. I don't want to be too specific about it, but I do think whenever we get to play against these really insane teams and we get to rewatch our games, we get to learn from them; we can take so much away from it. Today we kind of failed to execute many of the things that we wanted to do better on. Of course, with MSI just being like a week ago, we didn't have a lot of time to adapt and we didn't have a lot of time to just work on the things, but it's something that we will have to do during this tournament. And I think if we can do it better against
, I'm already going to be very happy and impressed. And it means we can look forward to new strategies, new things to develop.
What are the most important things for you during the EWC?
Caps: Definitely just developing is the most important, and also with Perkz taking over, it's a huge shift, of course, and even him not being on stage yet is also making things a little bit more difficult, but we just want to get comfortable with this new version of ourselves. I think that's probably the most important, but… We also really want to not forget all the lessons that we got from MSI and that we got previously, and we need to make sure these things are improved on because otherwise we will just go home early.
A last quick question. Will you play League of Legends Classic?
Caps: Oh yeah, I mean I'll definitely play a few games. I really want to play, probably Nidalee and Gragas. I'm not sure which exact patch this is, but I remember at the end of season 3 I was climbing a lot with Nidalee and Gragas. So I want to give them a shot. And maybe LeBlanc and Talon if they still have the silence. I used to play a lot when they had the silence, so I'll give those just a chance to go.”
