survived one of the biggest scares of the
2026 Mid-Season Invitational, taking down
3-2 to secure their spot in the grand final against Bilibili Gaming. After a tournament filled with Western upsets, HLE’s victory ensures that the MSI title will once again be decided between the LCK and LPL, with every other representative now eliminated from contention.
The series was a historic one regardless, as LYON pushed the LCK’s first seed to the limit and became the
first LCS team to reach the MSI top four since 2022. However, HLE’s resilience ultimately prevailed, with the Korean squad overcoming LYON’s momentum to keep their championship hopes alive and set up
a rematch against
for the MSI 2026 title.
Through this win,
both the LCK and LPL will send four representatives at Worlds 2026, maintaining the status quo of recent years on the internal stage.
Hopes for the West
Game 1 was an incredibly close battle, but Hanwha Life Esports' superior map play ultimately made the difference. While
,
, and a strong Ambessa performance from
kept LYON competitive, HLE steadily built small advantages through better rotations, objectives, plates, and farm. LYON clawed their way back by winning the 15-minute Herald fight, but a lost teamfight at 24 minutes and a failed Hextech Soul contest four minutes later put HLE back in control. LYON even managed to sneak the Elder Dragon to delay the game, but
continued to carry teamfights as HLE patiently closed out the opener.
The next game started in a rather similar manner, with HLE building an early 2,000-gold lead by the 10-minute mark. However, the game flipped at the second dragon fight thanks to a brilliant Ezreal performance from
, bringing LYON back into contention. From there, Saint took over on his signature Akali, finding crucial picks to help break the game open as LYON slowly turned the gold lead in their favor. A dominant 4-for-1 teamfight around the 20-minute mark secured Baron and effectively sealed the game, with HLE collapsing shortly after. LYON continued to win every major fight, claimed the Dragon Soul, and closed out the game with one final decisive teamfight around the 30-minute mark.
HLE then continued their streak of early advantages, though the lead was less dominant than in the previous games. The gold difference remained rather stable, until a disastrous overextension on a botlane dive by LYON at 13 minutes gave the Koreans a massive 4-for-2 trade and a 2,000-gold swing. HLE then slowly kept extending their lead through picks and objectives to reach a 5,000-gold advantage by 23 minutes. Then, everything changed through a failed engage from
on Yone, completely flipping the game, as both HLE carries fell and LYON secured Baron, turning a 5k deficit into a 5k lead almost instantly. LYON continued their momentum with another dominant teamfight win shortly after, completing the comeback in just a few minutes.
Back to Reality
Game 4 was a back-and-forth battle where LYON found early success through
’ incredible Pyke performance, constantly creating plays across the map. However, HLE’s composition eventually began to outscale, with
taking over the game on Naafiri. The jungler delivered a massive 1v9 performance, repeatedly finding picks and outclassing Inspired to put HLE back in control. Despite LYON’s early pressure, they could not keep up once HLE’s carries came online, forcing the series to a decisive Game 5.
As
Silver Scrapes came, so did HLE who pulled out confidence picks, with Kanavi on Nidalee and Gumayusi pairing Kalista with
’s Blitzcrank. LYON quickly fell behind, bleeding across the map as HLE built a lead. A desperate bot lane dive then gave the HLE midlaner a triple kill and ended North America’s hopes. Delight showcased why Blitzcrank is one of his signature champions, and HLE completely ran over the game, reaching a 10k gold lead by 19 minutes to eventually close out the series.
With their hard-fought victory over LYON still fresh, Hanwha Life Esports now turn their attention to the ultimate challenge: the MSI 2026 grand final against Bilibili Gaming on Sunday, July 12. The rematch promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the tournament, with HLE looking for revenge after BLG nearly swept them in the upper bracket earlier in the event.
