sat down with
Sheep Esports to discuss the team’s recent rhythm, how the squad has adapted to its
recent coaching staff changes, and the road ahead.
You've gone from the LEC Spring Finals to MSI, EWC, and now Paris with very little downtime. How has that busy schedule affected the team?
Rasmus "Caps" Winther: “It’s definitely been a lot of travel, feeling a bit drained. Getting used to different hotels and different food has definitely brought us a bit out of our comfort zone. So we're just doing everything we can, and Ismael "Isma" Pedraza is doing a great job as well at helping us eat healthy, get enough sleep, and make sure we keep our condition up.
We might not be playing the best version of League right now, but as long as we take the right lessons and stay healthy in spirit, then I think we're going to come out on the other end in a great spot. It's a great experience, right? Getting to play in front of so many fans and also playing against teams from all over the world.
You said you're not playing your best League of Legends right now. Is that partly because of your packed schedule?
Caps: Partly. It’s definitely one of the reasons. Generally, we usually have some weaker performances at the start of the split as well.
We learned so much at both MSI and EWC, and we're doing our best to apply it. I think it definitely helped us pull the series back against MKOI today.
But we're still failing in many ways. We've only had one scrim day since EWC. Still, I think we're good at recognizing what we need to work on right now. It seems very clear to me, and it seems clear to the team.
But we're definitely struggling to find time. We were even doing a bit of VOD review at the airport because we've been at the airport so much recently. Struggling to find time to play solo queue, to even rest a bit, and to find scrims as well. We would love to have a bit more time.
How would you describe the team's atmosphere? Has the environment changed at all with the changes to the coaching staff?
Caps: I wouldn't necessarily say it has changed that much. Of course, coming after our MSI elimination and then again quite a tough performance at EWC… it definitely did darken the mood for a time, but I feel happy that our way towards improvement is very clear.
It’s rather obvious what mistakes we are still making and what we need to fix. The worst position you can find yourself in is when you can’t see that next step anymore, when you stop to progress. These are the toughest moments because you find yourself in a spot where you don’t know where to put in work anymore.
Right now, I see our direction very clearly, and I know what to do with this team.
Is the team's direction clearer now than it was one or two months ago?
Caps: For sure. Not necessarily because of our coaching staff changes, but also because we’ve amassed so much experience playing at MSI and EWC against the LPL and LCK. I came to some realizations about the way we practice, which, in my opinion, was just not good enough.
Perkz is the type that will push us to the furthest of what we’re capable of. He will show confidence in us to play even champs we may not be familiar or comfortable with. Today, I pulled out the Locke, for example. Obviously, not my best performance, but he put that trust in me, and, you know, if those kinds of picks work out, then he’ll have helped me unlock something new, add a new weapon to my arsenal.
It’s the same with gameplay. He will try some new strategies, and if they work, great, we have some weapons that we were not comfortable with before. He's really good at bringing that comfort and bringing that confidence. He's a good leader. He's always a bit delusional in a way, but as my teammates said, having some delusion is needed to make sure we can get to even greater, crazier heights.
With Europe performing well internationally this year, do you feel like this is an especially important year to make a deep Worlds run?
Caps: Honestly, we need to perform regardless of what’s going on in the scene, right?
But I definitely see that this year feels different, since Europe and North America have been winning more. Not only us, but also KC at EWC, and LYON at MSI. Every region in the world have felt more competitive with one another, so it obviously feels like it could make snatching that Worlds trophy a little easier, right?
Still, for us, the goal has remained the same the entire time. We are focusing on ourselves, trying to improve as much as possible, and hopefully, by Worlds, we’ll be the strongest team in the World.”
