This year, Riot introduced a bevy of changes for ranked LoL play for high elo players. First and foremost among these was the return of duo-queue for Master+, a long-awaited change after five years of restriction. This came alongside changes to the autofill system, and more. But with all these changes, LP gains have been erratic, and many high-ladder players have complained of elo inflation. Players abusing temporarily unbalanced new systems have allegedly been able to get much higher on the ladder than their lacking skills should’ve allowed. To address this, Riot is doing an unprecedented mid-season surprise "hard reset," sending all Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger players back to Master 0 LP, with a reset to their MMR as well.
The reset will come into effect on Patch 26.9 for players across Western LoL regions, including NA, EUW and EUNE, BR, LAN, and TR. With Riot having adjusted this year's new systems, they're aiming to get rid of all the volatility and elo inflation brought about pre-adjustments. Hopefully, players beginning their climb again from 0 LP can settle where they belong.
Known players with a history of reaching high ranks, like streamer Dantes, celebrated the reset.
