Understand the format of Worlds 2025
The League of Legends Worlds Championship 2025 will take place in three distinct stages. The first is called the Play-In and features only two teams (T1 and Invictus Gaming), the last teams to qualify through their regions (LCK and LPL, respectively).
The second stage - the Swiss Stage - begins just one day after the Play-In Stage and brings together the 16 teams that qualified for the World Championship. Finally, the Knockout Stage will pit the eight best teams in the world against each other in knockout matches, with no chance of a comeback! Here is a summary of each stage:
Play-In
T1, seed #4 from the LCK, faces Invictus Gaming, seed #4 from the LPL, in a best-of-five match to determine who will be the first team eliminated from Worlds 2025 and who will advance to the Swiss Stage.
An interesting fact about this stage is that it takes place in Fearless Draft mode, meaning that teams cannot repeat characters that have already been used previously in the series, making the games much more exciting.
Swiss Stage
The Swiss Stage is the stage with the most matches in the World Championship, where the 16 teams face each other in daily games between October 15 and 25. The matches begin in best-of-one series, with higher-seeded teams facing lower-seeded teams. From then on, teams with the same results continue to face each other until they reach three wins - guaranteeing qualification for the Knockout Stage - or suffer three losses - being eliminated from the tournament.
To add more excitement and raise the level of the series during the Swiss Stage, only non-elimination/qualifying matches will be played in a best-of-one format. Teams with two losses or two wins will then play in a best-of-three format, ensuring that only the best survive to the final stage.
Knockout Stage
The third and final stage of Worlds will feature the eight best League of Legends teams in the world in 2025. Only seven series will be held between October 28 and October 9, with three best-of-five series separating each team from the World Championship title.
In this stage, there are no second chances: the matches will be played in a best-of-five format, and the losing team will be eliminated. The team that wins the last best-of-five of the season on October 9 in Chengdu will secure the Worlds 2025 title.
