Step by step to the Worlds
On Monday, July 28, Riot Games revealed the competitive roadmap for Riftbound, its upcoming trading card game (TCG) set in the League of Legends universe. In a post on its official website, the American publisher unveiled a part of the roadmap, which will culminate with the first-ever World Championship planned for 2027.
The competitive future of Riftbound is broken down into several distinct stages, much like other esports ecosystems developed by Riot Games, offering players a ladder to climb. Everything is set to kick off alongside the long-awaited launch of the game’s English version. The Origins Release Events, named after the game's first set, will mark the official launch on October 31, 2025, featuring preconstructed decks centered around Jinx, Lee Sin, and Viktor. These initial tournaments will be hosted locally by participating game stores, giving TCG fans a first opportunity to dive into Riftbound.
Starting from the bottom
Following this initial phase, Nexus Nights will take over—weekly events held at partner stores. These gatherings will form the grassroots foundation of Riftbound, fostering local scenes and giving amateur players a regular place to play. The formats of these nights are flexible and will be determined by store owners.
The Summoner Skirmishes will represent the first truly competitive tier of Riftbound. Held twice per set (once a month after release and again a month before the next one), these 1v1 tournaments will offer attractive rewards, including promo cards, playmats, and even the chance to skip the first round of the upcoming Regional Qualifiers. This 1v1 constructed format will be used throughout the rest of the official competitive circuit.
A real competitive circuit
The next step up for competitive players will be the Regional Qualifiers, the first tier to feature cash prizes. Open to all without prior qualification, the first events of this kind will begin in December 2025 and will grant spots for the Regional Championships. These championships represent the first major milestone in Riftbound’s competitive circuit and will debut in October 2026. Much like Riot’s leagues for League of Legends or VALORANT, these large-scale events will be accessible only through qualification. They are also expected to award slots for the World Championship, along with the usual prize pools and exclusive promo cards.
While no details about the location or dates were shared, Riot Games has confirmed that the first Riftbound World Championship will take place in 2027. The publisher added that more information will be revealed soon—likely around the game's official release this October.
